Deciding to enter the beauty industry is a viable career path to pursue. The demand for beauty services remains steady even during economic downturns. If you have decided that you want to become an esthetician, you should start by educating yourself on the statistics of the industry. The Bureau of Labor Statistics, for example, estimates that the demand for skin care specialists will increase 14% through 2026. With 60,000 already employed in this field, at least 8,000 more specialists will be added to the labor market.

If you are ready to embark on the path that will lead to a career as an esthetician, here are three steps you will need to take.

Education

To earn the right to practice as an esthetician, you do have to attend an education program that teaches you the ins and outs of this career. As a skin specialist, you are going to perform facials, waxing services and other body treatments. First and foremost, you have to learn the best practices of the industry. If you do not know how to handle your equipment, or how to correctly apply treatments to your client’s skin, you could cause damage.

Additionally, you are going to study the skin, itself. As you become comfortable with your job, you will find that you can confidently answer relevant client questions in regards to their skin. The advise you can give may be limited, but you can at least point a client in the right direction. Plus, you will be able to make educated product recommendations.

Earn Your License

Once you have completed the education requirement, you qualify to apply for a license to practice skin care. Licensing has become an important step because government agencies are trying to keep the public safe by screening candidates.

Gain Experience

Once you have successfully earned your license, it is time to gain experience. This is when you find out if you can truly handle the demands of your new career.

To become an esthetician, complete the education requirement, earn your license, and then, gain experience.
