Most people think of Texas as a hot and dry expanse of desert, but that could not be further from the truth. From lakes and rivers to forests and canyons, here are five beautiful places to visit in Texas.
Galveston Beach
A lovely beach that stretches over seven miles along the Gulf Coast of Texas, Galveston Beach is also close to a festive and fun downtown. Although you would not consider Galveston Beach a great hike, it definitely offers walkers a relaxing trek that features calm waves and warm ocean water. Instead of driving to an out-of-the-way location, you can travel easily by using a Houston Hobby to Galveston port shuttle to the beach.
Big Bend National Park
The desert and mountains morph as one in this breathtaking park. With miles of rural hiking and biking trails, it is easy to get lost in the park’s natural beauty. The limestone cliffs transport visitors to the old world and the ancient pictographs found in the caves will be there long after we are gone.
Caddo Lake State Park
The only natural lake found in Texas, Caddo Lake is also a bayou found along the Texas-Louisiana border. If paddling or fishing is more your style for recreation, then Caddo is the perfect spot to take your family. There is a wildlife preserve, several cabins available for rent, and thousands of acres to hike too.
Hamilton Pool Preserve
Located roughly twenty-five miles west of Austin, Hamilton Pool is quite simply a swimming hole. The natural pool was formed due to erosion over thousands of years. The pool is open to swimmers of all ages year-round, and its crystal clear blue waters are heavenly. Be sure to visit in the summer when the Austin weather is hot and humid.
Davy Crockett National Forest
For a truly in-the-middle-of-nowhere experience, look no further than this forest. The adventurer that it’s named after would be proud to hike, bike, fish, or ride his horse through the dense foliage.
Texas may have a reputation for its desert landscapes, but the state should be known for its variety of natural beauty too. Visit somewhere new today.
